Photo Progress Of Custom Built Home During The Month Of April 2010

The product on this custom deep-water home is Nichiha shakes.  Nichiha US is based in Georgia and makes its products there.  Here’s their website http://www.nichiha.com/prod_shake.htm .  It’s a fiber cement product, similar to the more familiar Hardiplank and Hardiboard.  Nichiha also makes fiber cement plank  siding.  The web page gives more info on wind resistance and warranties.

In general, shake siding is more expensive than planks (however, installation costs vary little, if any).  The home owners selected shakes (vs. planks) for purely aesthetic reasons.  Hardi products have been around for a long while, and are the most well known of the cement-based siding products.  They are also the most expensive.  Without regard to cost, Steve Fennell of Tradition Homes of South Carolina finds the Nichiha product superior.  It has a more substantial, durable feel, in large part due to its thickness ( ½”  vs ¼” for Hardi shakes), and comparable warranty.  So, in selecting Nichiha shakes, the owners will receive a superior product at a more favorable price.
